i am a beginner and most books explain how to play in a long-handed game. can anyone recommend me a good book for short-handed and heads-up?

I don't think there any books entirely devoted to short-handed play. The best section in any book on short-handed play I've seen is in HEFAP, 21st century edition.

Better solution: learn the game well by reading here and playing hands, and later be thrilled no comprehensive 6-max manuals exist.

Good luck.

You've gotten some good replys here so far. The only thing I would add is that most of the books about full tables include a section on blind stealing and playing from the blinds. Blind play becomes much more important shorthanded, as steal situations are much more common. When playing very shorthanded you are even in a constant steal situation. While the dynamics change a bit from short-handed blind steals to those done at full tables, the information you can get from books in this regard is still valuable.

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

Its the same game, just different situations. Boy oh boy, you will be in trouble when you make it past small stakes if you always need a book to tell you what to do.
