Default Poker League - Calculating Player Ranking

Hi All,

I'm going to start awarding points for my regular home tourneys, and I was wondering if anyone knows how player ranks are calculate for the WPT or professional poker players in general.

Thx,

what about using total prize money won?

this method has the distinction of overweighting the large tournaments and/or the more expensive tournaments. The theory being that those tournaments will most likely be the most difficult to win.

I only play with 6 or 7 people regularly, and I want to hold an annual championship tourney. Here are the rules I'm using for the championship tourney:

The total amount of chips used in the championship tournament will be $10,000 for each player. For example, if 4 players are participating in the tournament, there will be $40,000 in chips available. Each players starting chip amount is proportionate to their point standings for the current year. For example, if the players are participating in the championship tournament have accumulated the following points over the year:

Player 1 Points - 50 (50% of 40,000 = $20,000)
Player 2 Points - 25 (25% of 40,000 = $10,000)
Player 3 Points - 15 (50% of 40,000 = $6,000)
Player 4 Points - 10 (50% of 40,000 = $4,000)
Total Points - 100

If I was using cash winnings, it would be possible for one player to win no preliminary/qualification tourneys throughout the year and have 0 chips for the championship tourney.

Maybe there's a better way to do this?

I just read through all the points threads, and one suggestion that I haven't seen is using ROI for a point system.

pts = (prize won - buyin)/(buyin)

This would have the advantage of rewarding those who properly adjust their tournament strategy based on the prize structure. The only problem is that it doesn't reward people for showing up, and it doesn't reward people for playing in larger buyin (and therefore harded) tournaments. To fix this, The formula could be modified as follows:

pts = [(prize won - buyin)/(buyin)] + (K*buyin)

where K is some constant.

what do people think of this, and what should K be?

Maybe I should just make things easy like suggested on homepokertourney.com...

If there are 10 players in the tourney, award the following point:

1st - 10
2nd - 9
3rd - 8
...
9th - 2
10th - 1

Easy and it accomplishes what I need.
