Default Skydiver Dies After Striking Plane in Fla.

Skydiving = -ev, also what irony his last name was Wing.

DELAND, Fla. (AP) - A man who was skydiving in central Florida struck the wing of a plane as he descended over an airport, losing both his legs in the accident. The man later died, officials said.

Albert Wing III hit the airplane that he jumped from Saturday morning, police Cmdr. Randel Henderson said. Police said the victim had opened his parachute when he struck the left wing at about 600 feet. His legs were severed at the knees, but he managed to land near an airport.

Wing was taken to a hospital, where he later died, Henderson said. The plane landed safely. DeLand is about 40 miles north of Orlando.

Fourteen other skydivers were in the air at the time of the accident, Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Holly Baker said. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board were investigating.

Skydive DeLand, which organized the jump, said Saturday's accident was not common. The death was the second involving the company this year.

Wow. That sucks. Especially the part about having both legs severed before dying.

I jumped twice. First time I nearly missed the plane's wheels. I had no idea till I landed. I also have a friend who is a pro base jumper. He started diving barefoot, until he lost 1/2 his foot on barbed wire when he landed off course... lets just say its not a safe sport.

Who would think it was safe? If it was safe, it wouldn't have its appeal.

I jumped once and 600 feet, if I remember correctly, is beyond the point of being able to land safely. What the plan was doing below the divers doesn't make much sense either. Looks like a good school to avoid.

I think the idea is he struck another plane, being near an airport and all. Still, very poor planning.

So if I understand this correctly he and 14 others jump from the plane safely then the plane circles out and comes in to land and catches the guy at the knees with the wing of the plane at 600 feet??? Correct???

This is horrible, but somehow I had to laugh at his last name. (I know I am a evil horrible person, so save the hate)
