Horrible advice.

In limit, how can you not call 8:1, 7:1 or even 6:1 on the flop with a rainbow gutshot on an unpaired board? You have 2 more betting rounds of double bets to make up the difference with implied odds if you hit.

To this I'd add the following, paraphrasing Mike Caro's book on Poker Tells:

2. Watch your opponents as they get cards, particularly
their eyes.

[/ QUOTE ]

Actually, it's difficult to watch everyone look at their hole cards. The most important people to watch are the player to your immediate right, and the two players to your immediate left.

If you are in a hand, it's important to try and watch everyone else who is in the hand when the flop comes.

Tight, aggressive play wins.

Duh.

Tight is right. It's an old one, but boy, is it true.

Another one I read the other day, from Layne Flack, that I like a lot (paraphrased): "Playing poker well isn't about learning to read your opponents; it's about learning to read how your opponents are reading you." Gives you an idea as to the types of things you want to be thinking about when you're playing.

[/ QUOTE ]

Tight is right? Depends on the game, I guess. Agressive play, usually post flop, is most important, whether you are tight or loose. But loose aggressive play can be very lucrative. As a corollary, passive play post flop is the path to destruction.

Layne's thought can be boiled down to playing "as if", if you have ever seen Boiler Room. Example: if you raise with JJ in early position, and the flop comes AK3, play as if you had AK. If you had AK, others would expect you to check that flop with top 2. So check it. If checked around, others would expect a turn bet. So bet the turn. This is a much more effective way to play that hand than betting out on the flop.

The best poker advice anyone could receive is this:

Make the decision with the highest long-term EV.

[/ QUOTE ]

Excellent choice of words. Every decision need not be highest EV at the moment. For example, you may want to raise with a suited connector under the gun so that your Aces get action the next time. See Harrington on Holdem (raises with suited 0-gappers UTG 15% of the time).

Long term EV is key.

Never play limp in with weak hands out of position.

[/ QUOTE ]

Never is a long time.

In a passive limit game without much preflop raising and several players usually seeing the flop, no harm in limping suited connectors and small pairs before late position.

In a no limit game with deep money (an huge implied odds if you hit your hand), suited connectors and small pairs play well for a limp before late position.

Always leave yourself an out. Take that as you wish. :-)

But if you never ever bluff, then how will your value bets ever get paid off?
