If there are a lot of preflop raises from non-premium hands, and people often limp/fold, there may be a large enough overlay to call, knowing that you are behind. You might end up heads-up with a hand that is a 2:1 favorite, but you might win 6 times your money if you win. That is very favorable. I see this opportunity often in tournaments. If I end up with under 2 BB, I might call a big raise with a weak hand, knowing that the blinds and limpers will probably fold. That gives me enough of an overlay to be happy to call with a hand like 97s that may win just under 40% against the raiser's range of hands. Of course, usually I bust out, but I have also bounced back to win a few SNGs after using this tactic. This illustrates that it is an advantage to be short-stacked. |
