Default Marching upward

Hello, this is my virgin post. I'm new enough to the game that i'm still in slow march to higher stakes. Now I play in the PP nl400/600 range (2/4 and 3/6), and I've noticed that every time I bump up to a new stake, I experience an initial rush of good play and profit. This usually lasts for a week or two before things settle down. I can't figure out if this is due to unusual luck or the fact that as a new player I am unknown and it throws people off for a while. The question at the heart of this is, how long does it take before you begin to "know" a new player and identify their style? I know the highest limits are like a family where everyone knows everyone else's business, but I can't imagine that this can happen in such a short period of time. If so, perhaps I should moniter my game all the more carefully? Thank you.
