Default Card Player?

Hi all,

I wasn't exactly sure where to put this thread, so I'm sticking it here (if it would've been better somewhere else please let me know, as I'm new ).

I've been reading articles at cardplayer.com of late, mostly just going through the archives and reading Jan Fisher's "Poker 101" columns. The information is pretty basic, but for me it's sometimes good to reinforce the basics (as I consider myself an advanced beginner, or possibly an intermediate player at best). One particular article I enjoyed was the one about quitting as soon as you know you're not playing your A game. The example she used was when you're down to almost nothing and rather than quitting (and saving that $10 bucks or whatever) you instead keep playing (poorly) until you loose it all. I know this is a problem I suffered when I first started playing as I would take a bad beat, go on tilt (as much as you can in micro-limits ), and keep playing until my stack belonged to someone else. By quitting earlier (when you know you're tilting) you can end up saving that small stack to use another day.

Anyways, I'm rambling a little. The whole point to this post was to ask the readers of Card Player what other articles (authors, regular features, etc), would be good reading for someone of my experience.

Also, am I correct in assuming that there are additional articles in the print version than on the website? What additional benefits (i.e. articles/information) would I gain by getting a subscription? (What are some of the important things available in print only?)

Hope that all makes sense,
Thanks,
jHE

Jim Brier's articles are some of my favorites.

I wish he still posted here, when I used to read 2+2 a couple of years ago he was a frequent poster and I really enjoyed his posts.

Yea, too bad he does not write for Card Player anymore. Well they still have S & M.

Jason,

My favorite CP writers are Sklansky & Malmuth. I really liked Jim Brier's stuff when he was writing there. I think Schoonmaker writes some good stuff too.

A few of the other writers will hit one out of the park now & then also.

"Most" of what's in the print version is also on their website. I would subsribe if I were you, it's only money. And the cartoons are pretty cool (N.A. online, btw)

Best of Luck

Howard

Why doesn't he write for Card Player anymore? His articles were by far the most valuable there (along with S&M and non-recent Roy Cooke articles).

Hi Homer,

My understanding is that he has some other very worthwhile things going on in his life, that take up a lot of his time. Hence, takes a break from writing columns. We (poker players) hope it's just a semi-retirement from poker writing but I would not hold my breath.

I believe Jim still loves to play poker. He's just a very busy man.

Best of Luck

Howard

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Bob Ciaffone's articles yet. Along with S/M, Briar and Cooke, I usually find his stuff to be must-read.

Also, since you asked, I believe CardPlayer publishes their full text online, you won't be missing any content if you stick to reading the web version.

I like Roy cooke (good for learning), and Daniel Negreanu (Not much actual game info, but a lot can be learned, and his archives talk about how he started)

I pick up the latest issue (for free) when in the card room. I have yet to notice anything that I feel I missed reading same online (except maybe the above mentioned cartoons).

P.S. Well maybe the better resolution on the recent cover photo from Hustler casino.
