Default Controversy and Interesting Floor Decision at WPT Champ...

from cardplayer.com

Here's what happened at Table #52: Ted Lawson (seat 1) had pocket queens, and Alan Schein (seat 9) had 9-8. The final board read 6-3-2-4-5 -- a six-high straight. Lawson showed his pocket queens, but Schein said something to the effecct of "I'm playing the board," and mucked his hand. At that point, the players at the table jumped out of their seats claiming his hand was dead, and Lawson should be awarded the entire pot. There was a lot of shouting and chaos, and one of the floorpeople asked all of the dealers in the room to stop dealing after the current hand. The pause in action only lasted 2-3 minutes before McClelland ruled that Schein could play the board, and the pot was chopped. Order was quickly restored in the room, and a few minutes later the players were on a 15-minute break.

Wow, what a terrible decision. By that logic, next time I fold preflop, I should be able to play the board if a straight shows and take a part of the pot.

No. Floor made the correct decision.

How can you split the pot without a hand at showdown?

Thanks, didn't realize that if you declared that you were playing the board that it was okay to muck. In the places that I've played, you still have to show down your hand.

Poker is a 5-card game, not a 7-card game. The floor made the correct decision imho

You are seriously this dense? You think having a hand at showdown and saying "I play the board" is the same thing as mucking your hand pre-flop and then asking to chop the pot on the river? Are you serious?

Whether or not you still have to table your hand after declaring "I play the board" is a rules question. At many cardrooms, that is sufficient if you have a live hand at showdown. But no matter what the rules, equating this situation with mucking your hand preflop is ludicrous and makes absolutely zero sense.
