Johnny Chan Angle Shot in WPT Championship??
From Cardplayer.com
The first player of the day has already been eliminated. Johnny Bax was pleased to find himself seated at a table without any top professionals, until Johnny Chan took a seat a dozen or so hands in. Bax looked down a few hands later to find pocket kings, and made a standard raise of $400. Johnny Chan raised him to $1,500, and Bax called. The flop came 9-5-3 rainbow, Bax checked, Chan bet $2,000, and Bax called. The turn card was a 2, and again Bax checked. Johnny Chan put $13,000 in the pot, and then tried to pull $8,000 back, saying he misread the colors through his sunglasses. Bax wanted the bet to stand, and the floor was called over to rule that all $13,000 had to stay in the pot. At that point, Bax pushed all in, and Johnny Chan called immediately with pocket aces. The river was a blank, and Chan doubled up while Bax was sent home as the first elimination of the day. What do you all think?? Chan misread the colors? or he purposely wanted to look weak? Also what are the starting chips for this event? 25,000? |

Re: Johnny Chan Angle Shot in WPT Championship??
13000 would be a big overbet. It is likely that he only wanted to bet 5k, which would be just about the pot size.

So, in excess of 7,000. A 5,000 bet would be about a 2/3 pot bet. On a 9,5,3 (rainbow) 2 board, a 2/3 pot bet on the turn with AA is much more reasonable than a bet which is approaching a 2xpot size. |

Thanks I was too lazy to do the math, but that's the gist of what I was trying to say.

Does it matter? No matter what the ruling is, Bax loses all his chips this hand.

No, it doesn't matter. The issue, though, is whether or not Chan was shooting an angle.

"angle" is connotative of doing something dishonest.
There is nothing dishonest about this in any way. At worst, it is a very elaborate trap. |

Re: Johnny Chan Angle Shot in WPT Championship??
There's definitely no angle whatsoever.
One might make an argument that it's a bit of a dickish move, but that's beside the point anyway, because it certainly appears to be a genuine error on his part. I mean, he hasn't really been playing poker very long, after all. Those chips can be confusing! Kidding. Looks like a legit mistake to me. |

Although if it was a move it definitely worked. |
