Ive often read that AA is worth 4 times the blinds so it is a catastrophe to merely steal the blinds w/ AA.
Ive also read that hands like AQ and below are not worth more than the Blinds so the best thing that can happen is that u steal the blinds. How do people come up w/ these long run Values of hands? I of course understand the difference b/t multiway value, shorthanded value, and Hot and cold value. I think i have a firm grasp on multiway, and Hot & cold hand values... but i dont understand how to evaluate the hand values in a shorthanded environment. I usually just default to Hot and Cold values since there is very rarely multiway action in shorthanded play. thanks peter |

Hot and Cold values? I have never heard of that, could you tell me what that means?

Hot and cold values are how hands would perform if both players were all in from the start... like in nolimit holdem when 2 people go all in preflop. like
A [img]/forums/images/icons/spade.gif[/img] A [img]/forums/images/icons/diamond.gif[/img] vs A [img]/forums/images/icons/heart.gif[/img] 8 [img]/forums/images/icons/club.gif[/img] 92.8% to 7.2% peter |

I know that Abdul Jalib concluded AA was worth 4x the BB, by doing simulations with Turbo Texas Holdem. His web site is http://www.posev.com But for the record, I found my own sim results on shorthanded play to be dangerous and misleading. (At least to my game). |

Hi,
I looked at the posev.com site and wasn't able to find any sort of a breakdown or list of long-run hand values. (Although the few articles there were interesting and useful). Am I just not seeing it? Or is the information available at some other location? If not, how were you (and/or CrazyAzn) coming up with the figures (e.g., AQ being worth about the blinds, AA being 4x, and so on)? Thanks. |

I think your response was just a bit off. "Hot & cold value" is not the value if all-in pre-flop. Rather, one (I think "hot value"--can't remember which) is the value if the hand is played through. The other ("cold value") is how the hand does if all-in preflop. So "hot & cold" does not mean all-in, rather it is referring to both separate values jointly. [This is obviously just a nitpick but I thought I would pick nits since the original poster was asking for a definition.]
