Poker runs in the Brenes family, in addition to Alex already mentioned, Humberto has brother Eric who won a cool $1,000,000 at the Aruba Poker Classic last September.

You pick extremely odd cross-sections of players for any of your comparisons, and none of them ever seem to make sense

This guy seems to have an uncanny ability to either win, or come very close to winning in many big nl tournaments. Is he a great player? If so what makes him so good? He is possibly another very underrated player. I would take him in any BIG nl tourney over T.j., Doyle, Dutch Boyd, Scott Fshman, Antonio E., The unibomber, and Mike Mattusow. And its not even a close decision. He has clearly shown an uncanny knack of deep finishes throughout the years to say he would be a better choice than any of the ones i have mentioned.

fischman, boyd, antonio, and laak are all very young. how can they be less consistent over the years if they weren't even legally allowed to play?

aside from the wsop, there really haven't been any major tournaments over the years, so this piece of logic pretty much falls flat on its face.

If Brenes is so consistent in big events, what's up with the gap here? You say that he's more consistent in larger field events, as well.. There are only two listed, and they're both within the last year. You used this very same argument (short term luck) in your discussion of overrated players such as negreanu. Do some research before trying to use the same information for arguing two sides of the exact same question. This list is restricted to ~$50k+ cashes

14-Dec-04 United States $ 15,000 World Poker Tour Championship - No Limit Hold'em
Five-Diamond World Poker Classic, Las Vegas 2nd $ 923,475
13-Nov-04 United States $ 10,000 No Limit Hold'em Final Day - WPT
2004 World Poker Finals, Mashantucket 3rd $ 636,930
05-May-99 United States $ 3,000 Limit Hold'em
30th World Series of Poker (WSOP) 1999, Las Vegas 2nd $ 101,400
09-May-96 United States $ 5,000 Seven-Card Stud
27th World Series of Poker (WSOP) 1996, Las Vegas 2nd $ 74,750
13-May-95 United States $ 5,000 Limit Hold'em
26th World Series of Poker (WSOP) 1995, Las Vegas 2nd $ 134,550

05-May-93 United States $ 2,500 Limit Hold'em
24th World Series of Poker (WSOP) 1993, Las Vegas 1st $ 149,000
04-May-93 United States $ 1,500 Omaha Pot Limit
24th World Series of Poker (WSOP) 1993, Las Vegas 1st $ 128,000
08-May-92 United States $ 2,500 No Limit Hold'em
23rd World Series of Poker (WSOP) 1992, Las Vegas 2nd $ 96,000

For comparison, here's TJ's record. I restricted it to ~$100k+ cashes. Only a handful of these meet my standard for 'small fields:'

23-Jun-04 United States $ 1,000 No Limit Hold'em
Festa al Lago II, Las Vegas 1st $ 129,119
35th World Series of Poker (WSOP) 2004, Las Vegas 1st $ 90,500
19-Apr-04 United States $ 25,000 WPT No Limit Hold'em Championship Final Day
2004 Bellagio Five-Star World Poker Classic/WPT Championship, Las Vegas 8th $ 133,064
03-Apr-04 United States $ 2,500 No Limit Hold'em
2004 Bellagio Five-Star World Poker Classic/WPT Championship, Las Vegas 3rd $ 80,762
22-Nov-03 United States $ 10,000 No Limit Hold'em - Main Event
2003 Showdown at the Sands, Atlantic City 5th $ 87,300
01-Sep-03 United States $ 5,000 No Limit Hold'em Main Event - WPT
2003 Legends of Poker, Los Angeles 3rd $ 146,775
2003 Bellagio Five-Star World Poker Classic WPT Championship, Las Vegas 1st $ 98,940
31-Mar-03 United States $ 5,000 No Limit Hold'em - WPT Championship Event
24-Apr-01 United States $ 2,000 Texas Hold'em (no limit)
32nd World Series of Poker (WSOP) 2001, Las Vegas 2nd $ 162,550
15-May-00 United States $ 10,000 World Championship No Limit Texas Hold'em
31st World Series of Poker (WSOP) 2000, Las Vegas 2nd $ 896,500
11-May-98 United States $ 10,000 No Limit Hold'em World Championship
29th World Series of Poker (WSOP) 1998, Las Vegas 3rd $ 437,500
01-May-98 United States $ 2,500 Omaha Pot Limit
29th World Series of Poker (WSOP) 1998, Las Vegas 1st $ 136,000

I'm not discrediting any of these players. I'm just letting you know that, as always, your arguments are faulty.
