cool. thanks. that's unfortunate. i was pretty sure there was a reason that nyc didn't already have nights like this set up since they are so popular throughout the rest of the nation.

So popular, and proven to be illegal in many municipalities time and time again. Read the reports about raids on bars across the country... its's not pretty.

Correct, however if you aren't playing for money (and ithere is no buy-in) then the games are 100% legal. That is how they are played here in Memphis. There are 3-4 bars EVERY NIGHT hosting tourneys. You play to win a seat in a large Tunica Tournaments. They've all aligned themselves with local Tunica Casinos. In NYC They might be wise to align themselves with Foxwoods or something.

Anyone with a little initiative could likely get this going at any bar that has a lot of space and a slow night. Weeknights work best as it's easy to talk the bar into giving you a corner to work with. The tables most folks use here are the cheaply made octagon tops that sit on top of reg bar tables. 11.5g Dice chips and royal cards (or paper cards). Other bars just throw a green tablecloth over two tables pushed together.

There are bars in NYC with poker tournaments, but they are not legal or public. Most occur only with regulars from the bar and their friends. Usually quite a few cops are players in these games. Back room poker games in NYC bars have been going on for a long time.

Do your research... bars have been busted for allowing "points" as the winnings. Numerous reports on this, try google.

A few years ago I took out a deck of cards in a bar in NYC to do a magic trick for my friends. The owner just about tackled me as soon as the cards came out, saying that he could lose his license.

yeah. i'm sure they exist. sort of like extended home games. that's not really what i am looking for though. i don't want to be putting on a night that is borderline legal. i'd rather just keep having my home games. i just thought a propper bar game would be fun.
