he could also have TT JJ QQ or even AA. Calling on the river is best.

JJ and AA both beat you

thanks for all the responses (extra props to those who went to 4 and 5 decimal places--I appreciate the thoroughness). I posted this hand because this is an area of my game that may need work. A lot of times I find myself heads up with a player in the 10/20 6-max and get either raised or check-raised on the river. If I had a legitimate, but not overly powerful hand, I would usually just auto-call without thinking just to see what he has (as opposed to calculating pot odds and thinking about if I win often enough). It seems that lately I haven't been winning too many of those times.

Here, I think calling is probably right for two reasons:

1. the opponent is unknown
2. I kinda played my hand like I hit a 9, so he may be raising with AJ.

thoughts?

I think folding is fine. Not many players play AK this way, and if he's stubborn he'll 3-bet the turn. My rating: 3

against an unknown i call this down every time. I don't see merit in making an arty farty fold against an opponent i have no read on. I do expect to lose though.

The second reason of something that you played it like a 9 sounds like absolute rubbish to me. If anything, your opponent may think you did the ol' cliche check-call-the-set-on-the-flop-to-checkraise-the-turn move. Most opponents will not raise the river with AJ here, but since you don't know to wich group he belongs : call.

ps. I would have definitely checkraised the flop, or made a stop 'n go on the turncard but this doesnt seem to be the issue

I would say this is an 9. Also, I agree with Apocalypse that you should check raised the flop.

This might make me sound ignorant but what does "made a stop'n go on the turn card" mean?

i don't think he calls the turn CR with AJ, but i'd call here anyway (the river, i mean).

call the flop, lead the turn

Am i missing something but why do people consider this to be an obvious line for a nine. I mean calling a missed flop with a king, and then checkraise your "luckily" spiked secondpair into the PFR??

People, when seeing this line at a table, consider it to most probably be a nine, are probably as a result of that calling down way too much i think?
