Looks to me like he thought he was afraid his A2 was no good on the flop or possibly also hit his Jack in which case it's a battle of kickers and you're already pretty close to playing the board (splitting at best). Then there are the less likely two pair hands... I fold.

I strongly disagree. I feel it is fairly commone that the sb here will completely miss and check/fold the flop.

Given your read on him, I'd fold it . . . but I'd also have bet the flop.
