Default Absolute Promo sends noobs to 2+2

From an email I got:

Question:
Mark,

I just started playing for real money online about a month ago.

I have noticed that there are several players that raise the blinds and continue to raise through out until they reach the river card thus making if very difficult to play your hand. What is a good rule of thumb when playing against these type of players?

I tend to back off quick and then realize that this person had no chance of winning the hand. I understand that playing for real money is a gamble but I find these type of people ruin it for others this making the game not enjoyable.

Sometimes I have to admit that I get very upset because I find it very difficult to actually win a hand with this individual playing so recklessly.

Any insight would help me drastically in going up against these types of players.

Tami

Answer:
Hi Tami,

Welcome to the exciting and hopefully rewarding world of real money poker! I chose your question to answer because I get asked this exact same question several times a week. It's like killing a bunch of birds with one stone! Wait, that's probably not very politically correct. Hmmm, let's just say this is like multitasking.

I recommend you adopt a tight-aggressive strategy at the outset of your real money play to combat the super-loose ultra-aggressive players of today. By that I mean, be selective in terms of the hands you decide to play, but once you decide to play a hand, play it strong. Of course, you have to take into consideration position, your opponents’ tendencies or style, whether the pot has been raised, chip stacks, and a multitude of other factors. This column unfortunately, is not the right forum to go into specifics as to which hands to play in which position, but there are some good free articles about this on the internet (twoplustwo.com forum is free and usually pretty good). Also, look for my tutorial DVD collection coming out later this year!

Hang in there. Many a great poker career has started off pretty frustrating because of what you have described. In the long run, good poker play will prevail.

Best of Luck and remember to always pay attention at the tables!

Count me in too, especially since it would prevent 99% of others from ever reading these forums.

Remember people, you can lead a PHISH to water, but you cannot make him drink.

Let the fish get all the advice they want, because most of them are too lazy to study and put it to proper use.

By the way! How many of you would have paid the fee to become part of twoplustwo before you knew what it had to offer. Hind sight is always 20/20!

It does not matter who reads the forums, the fish will be fish anyway, They will come here have a quick look around then think some fishy crap and forget about it. Only the people with enough drive and will to win will stay and actually learn something, And those players are the ones who would buy books and put the work in to learn poker anyway weather this site existed or not!

When i first found this site i suggested it to afew fish and most of them had already seen the site and came out with crap like Thats just a forum of know it alls! There's no way to beat poker, Its all pure luck. Then another backed him up with yeah the lucky poker player is better than the good poker player. The list goes on but they all found their reasons not read books or learn poker and to just keep doing what they are doing.

There's no need to worry guys only people who deserve to use this site will use it, The fish wont learn.

Yes but now they have got greedy and want to deny other the right to learn if they so choose. Its like the casino whoreing, nobody wanted a site explaining how to do because it would kill all the bonuses and theyn want to keep it all to themselfs.

I for one would like to give the fish the oppertunty to learn because I know the true fish wont actually take you up on it.

The few friends I showed the site to saw all the resident pro's talking about their 500BB bankrolls, and shrugged it off as BS. They all said there aren't that many winners out there consistently. They just didn't understand that most of the winners are here.....lol

there have been a lot of people who friends have referred here, people who are smart. they didnt stay. neither will the fish. if someone wants to learn and is motivated, he/she was finding the site anyway. the rest I'm not too worried about

Default Irrational fears

The fear of divulging "trade secrets" shows up in all walks of life, and was very prevalent in my ex-career on Wall Street. We would routinely see two accounts (one a consistent winner, one a consistent loser) gain access to priveleged information; the former takes advantage, while the latter manages to butcher the opportunity.

I argue if you hand out the key to the mint, only a small minority would know what to do with it; winners tend to continue to win, losers tend to lose. And the few losers with a winning mentality that are truly focused on improving their game will find their way here and through the myriad of valuable poker literature on their own with or without your intervention.

And in the world I come from, charging a fee to access something with perceived value tends to increase its desirability, not vice versa.
