Taking notes

Does anyone here take notes during live play, or just for online play? If so, what kind of notes do you take? I play small stakes live and online so there are a lot of wild players, but I'm reluctant to take notes right at the table because I'm afraid that it might change the way other people play against me. I try to keep mental notes, and will label players as loose, tight, retarded, or things like that just to keep things pretty general and easy, but I don't think that's enough. How do you guys keep track of other players when playing live?
