I\'ve been playing for about a year, how bad am I?
I started playing no limit texas hold 'em about a year ago, give or take. I wasn't playing poker at all at the time, but a friend of mine was playing in a home game, and it was only a matter of time until I got involved. I really wasn't even aware of the explosion of TV poker in the 'Moneymaker' year until I got involved in this game. I haven't stopped since.
The question is, where am I now? Am I doing well or poorly? In the past year, I've played in single table shootouts and small tournaments at an Indian casino in Arizona, I've played in $20 no-limit 6 handed shootout games in home games in both Tuscon and Los Angeles, and I've played cash games at several casinos in both Los Angeles and Vegas, $100 buy in no limit games. I've played about a million hands online at party poker, both in $11 single table sit-n-go's and also in $25 buy in no limit games. In short, I've been exposed to pretty much the full spectrum of low dollar no-limit games within the past year. I've read several books also. Some I've gone over more than one time. Sklansky, McEvoy, and everything I can find online from my personal favorite, Negreaneu. I've kept a record, which is more or less accurate. The result of all of the above for the first year is a total loss of about $800. Can I expect to get better in the next year? Am I ahead of the game, or behind the power curve?

Am I ahead of the game, or behind the power curve? [/ QUOTE ] You are losing in incredibly soft games. You are doing something wrong. It shouldn't take a year to learn to beat Party's NL 25. Since you have put in so much time and energy, I assume you enjoy the game and care about doing well. However, whatever analysis you have done of your own game is insufficient. Do you have Poker Tracker? No? Get it today. You can use it to analyze the games you have played on Party for the past few months. The easiest thing to do with it is to improve your preflop play by telling you which hands you think are good but have been costing you money. Read the SSNL forum. Much of the advice is wrong, or is adapted to the peculiar mistakes of particular sets of opponents, but you should be able to appreciate the thought processes people describe. When you are involved in a hand, win or lose, think about what each player had on each street. Did they have the odds to make the plays they did? Could you have won more money or lost less? If you work on your game, you should become a winning player quickly.

Behind. Far behind.
I started poker from scratch a little over a year ago on 'Stars with $100 and it took me 6 months before I started seeing that I might have some kind of game (staring to show profits by a higher ITM) Little over a year later now, 6 months after my 'learning month' and playing 2 to 5 $5.50/$11.00 SnG's a week and sitting down with an occasional $25 at $.5/$1 I'm up $370 online. Not exactly spectacular but not too shabby. I've probably only hit just over 12,000 hands in the year. I don't use PT to track my results, just my own spreadsheet where I keep track of BuyIn's, Winnings, Profits and ITM over grand totals and monthlys. Of course, I have no B&M experience and that can change the perception...but I still think it shouldn't take a loss of $800 over the year before you ask the question of "where do I stand?"

[/ QUOTE ] The bad news is you could be doing better. The good news is you have come to the right place. Hanging around here will fix your game up pretty quick if you are serious about it. Read, listen, post and above all check your ego at the door and you will learn alot here. Oh and get pokertracker. It is invaluable.
