Re: Flopping trips vs a pro
What more could you be looking for with your ATo? The flop was great, if he flopped a boat... well so be it. It happens.
If it's me I'm either doubled up or going home on this hand. Something else: (I have no idea who Allen is...) but just because he's a pro.. doesn't mean he has you beat. Does this make sense? The fact that he plays professionally shouldn't change how you play your game. He could just be trying to shake you up a little bit. You flopped a good hand, I wouldn't let him push you around. |

Were there any special table circumstances, like a notorious raiser in the blinds? [/ QUOTE ] Not that I noticed. It was one of his first hands at the table, too. |

Re: Flopping trips vs a pro
[ QUOTE ]
Level two (25/50 blinds). I'm at 2100 (or somewhere close --my recollection of the exact chip counts and bets is somewhat fuzzy). Allen Cunningham sat down to my immediate left just a few hands ago with about the same. No reads on him yet, but I know he's who he is. I pick up ATo in middle position and limp behind two limpers. Allen limps, too. Flop: Ac 6c Ad [/ QUOTE ] My initial reaction was "Oh $#%, I could be in big trouble here." After the limpers checked, I considered betting, but if anyone has an ace (or just feels like stealing) and raises me, I have to lay it down. So I checked. [ QUOTE ] Checked to Allen, who bets 250. Folded around to me, and I check-raise for another 400 more. He looks at me suspiciously, says "You have an ace?!" and calls. [/ QUOTE ] After Allen bet and everyone else folded, I considered calling, but I would have no idea where I was at and (assuming he didn't have an ace) there was a very good chance he'd check behind on the turn and I'd win very little. (Greedy, yes?) I decided to raise then and there to know exactly where I was at. As I said, when he made his comment, I interpreted that as a sign of weakness/genuine concern. [ QUOTE ] Turn: Qh I bet 700, he raises me all-in for another 700. I call. [/ QUOTE ] I didn't think he'd call my all-in and felt that this was the best way for me to get my chips in. Does the fact that I'm not pushing make this look like "I'm on a flush draw and I really don't want to go broke"? The call of the all-in was pretty automatic at that point. So I call and he looks down, shrugs, and says, "If you have an ace, I guess you win," and tables As7s. The river's a blank, and my hand is good. Any additional comments? I felt good about making a read and having the gumption to stick with it, but I'm more interested in knowing if folks feel this was a risk worth taking and if my tactics/reasoning were sound. Would simply checking and calling the flop have been a better play? |

Re: Flopping trips vs a pro
I think you overvalue betting to "know where you're at". You raised, he called, and you still had no idea if you were ahead or behind (at least reading the other posts in the thread make it seem like most people can't tell if you are ahead or behind yet).
Without belaboring an often made point on these forums, after that flop, you are either way ahead or way behind, so its best to let him put his chips in first. |

I would love to see Allen explain his play in this hand.

Re: Flopping trips vs a pro
Based on what he said when he showed the hand down, I would assume he put me on a flush draw.

Re: Flopping trips vs a pro
what a tough spot!
And I'm pretty sure you lost this pot too. I haven't ready any of the others posts yet but here is my 2 cents. Your check-raise *S C R E A M S* that you're holding an ace. When he calls your bet and puts you in, you are solidly beaten. He has AQ or 66 and my money is on the 66. Why? he'd have likely raised the AQ preflop and likely limped with the 66. -Scott |
