Microsofts Terminal Services is good. You will need XP pro or windows 2000 server for the "server side" PC. The client can connect using RDP (remote desktop) client. Its (client) included in xp but can be installed on any windows version. Its in startmenu/programs/accessories/communication/RemoteDesktop/
It uses port 3389 which , like VNC, has to be mapped on your router.

If you're running Windows XP Professional (I'm not sure if it's in the home version) then the remote desktop software that comes with it is fantastic.
