Re: How much do casino poker dealers make?
Im actually training to be one at a local casino. My only worry is that I will do something on accident and get fired. The reason I say this is because of all the stories ive read on here about dealers getting in trouble for doing something so simple. At the casino im going to deal at I wont even be allowed to say 'nice hand' when someone wins a pot.

come on guys, you can sit there and make dealing cards sound hard, which i'm sure it is at times, but you can't possibly compare that with a job like an EMT, ER nurse or high school teacher, all of whom work more hours for less pay.
I know dealers are near and dear to poker players, but after having read this thread, any comments on poor tippers that i hear will be ignored. first and second year medical residents make less, both yearly and hourly. that's sick. as for those using the market argument: 1. the job suffers from social stigma 2. the job offers little upward mobility except in the gambling industry, which again, #1 3. the job is not well advertised; i'd be willing to bet even money that i could find 10 bouncers/telemarketers/fast-food clerks who have no idea about such an opportunity and would gladly take such a job if the did. obviously the above contribute heavily to the high salary; what also contributes is the fact that the actual product, variance, which casinos sell is dirt cheap. all the money is in the packaging which makes for high salaries for those willing to spend their time creating and distributing randomness. fim |

Re: How much do casino poker dealers make?
Dealers should never comment on a hand. Along with the technical aspects of dealing thats one things thats overlooked in many dealer schools. Etiquette. There is a right and a wrong way to act in the box. I think that's just as important as dealing the cards. Bravo to your instructor. Good luck to you. I hope you enjoy your new dealing job. It's a lot of fun.

Re: please
A lot of the best dealers choose to do something other than deal poker. That should speak volumes about the pay.

So what? Pizza Hut delivery guys make more too. I did it all through college and made great money - more than the corporate job I got after college. Baseball players are the highest paid people in the US and all they do is hit balls and run fast. 1. the job suffers from social stigma If you care about this, which I do not, don't become a dealer. I feel sorry for my corporate buddies making less than me (some <half..lol), hating their 9-5 grind, but thinking that being a corporate suit is "respectable". LMAO. 2. the job offers little upward mobility except in the gambling industry, which again, #1 True. I also know two GM's of 2 different casinos who are doing VERY well indeed. Both started dealing: 1 blackjack, 1 poker. 3. the job is not well advertised; i'd be willing to bet even money that i could find 10 bouncers/telemarketers/fast-food clerks who have no idea about such an opportunity and would gladly take such a job if the did. You would loose that bet. We hired 36 dealers - auditions were advertised in the Denver post for 3 weeks. Also, what skills do fast food clerks, bouncers and telemarketers need besides speaking, being able to count (although most fast food clerks have no clue how to make change) or fight well? Ask a bouncer how to handle a new player wanting to get in a game between the Button and the SB and look at his bewildered face. People seem to think that dealing is just pitching cards in a circle - hilarious. As I wrote in another response, it's not brain surgery...just a job. Why such animosity? Oh yeah jealousy..... |

I know it's not a respectable profession [/ QUOTE ] I define a respectable as - doing something you love to do. Saying that casino dealer is not a respectable job maybe a bit harsh. I am not arguing, just asking that you think before you post. I would hate to see a legitimate question, i.e. “How much does a dealer make in AC?” i.e. Taj? Borgota? Trop? Vs. Tunica, Vegas rooms, Florida rooms, foxwoods? Second and most importantly, getting a job in AC at age 22 maybe a lot of fun! Many college grads take a year off to “travel” just after graduation. I worked in a restaurant, my roommates at bars and we had a blast for 2-3 years. Now, I have great, respectable, underpaying job with bills, credit cards, etc. God I miss being 23, paying $200/mo. Rent and no other monthly payments. But I guess you have to grow up sometimes. |

high school teacher, all of whom work more hours for less pay. [/ QUOTE ] More or less pay depends on location. Teachers work about the same number of hours as dealers; about 6 hours a day. Teachers are on a regular schedule and have summers off. I'm not saying there aren't some great teachers who work really hard, there are. The ones that do the minimum, however, don't really do that much work. |
