I think warm clothes, a deck of cards, and a degenerate gambler for a traveling companion would do in a pinch. Maybe a cell phone for when he runs out of money.

tarp tent closed cell foam pad gas stove metal container for boiling water food that takes water to rehydrate clothes water bottles first aid supplies flashlight lightsticks matches- waterproof 50 parachute cord nylon zip ties- large size cell phone folding shovel t.p. plus whatever i forgot |

FYI...you don't even need to have a cell phone w/ service. As long as the cell phone has battery strength and can pick up a signal, you can use it to call 911. I have read about a couple people whose lives have been saved with a cell phone they had tossed in their glove compartment and forgot about.

yes thats true the cell phone companies by law are required to provide 911 service. so everyone ought to at least have an old one stuck in the car.
