Default Thursday Night Poker

Has anyone read this book, and what are your thoughts?

It's been a while since I read it, but it is well written and well organized, and you don't see me saying that about many poker books. It is geared towards the recreational player who isn't playing for high stakes. Most of the advice is pretty decent, although it isn't designed for you to take your friends for every nickel you can. My major complaint at the time I bought it was that it had nothing on Omaha/8 (only Omaha high), and that was about 30% of what we played in my old home game.

It is geared toward pot-limit games. Its analysis of different types of players is good, with some rather entertaining names to help you remember their styles, e.g. Ty Tass, and a 2nd generation Chinese player known as Knot Wah Ching.

It is not too useful for structured limit games such as most online and card-room games, though.

In my opinion it is worth buying and reading. Good basic poker strategy, odds, and examples. Probably not a first-rate book but useful.

A very well thought out book that is truly unique. Steiner is a long-time, serious recreational poker player. His day job was as a college professor, so he is intelligent and writes well. For low limit casino play, Steiner's book is not nearly as helpful as Roy West (stud) or Lee Jones (HE). For more advanced players, he's certainly not as strong an analyst as Sklansky et al. But he does an excellent job of covering both limit and pot limit home games from $1-2 up to $10-$20 range. The heart of the book is analysis of how to play the most popular (non-wild card) home games. He has some interesting and mostly solid thoughts on each. However, his chapter on probabilities is outstanding for the non-statistically minded. His cheating chapter is entertaining. And his chapter on casino play is also very good. Definitely a worthwhile read for anyone who plays in home games.

I spent more time than I care to think about in college. I can think of any number of professors who weren't especially intelligent, and at least a few who didn't write very well.
