Default Re: Better place to live: AC or Foxwoods?

Since most of the previous posts are pro-AC, probably rightfully so, I'll give some pro-foxwoods area thoughts. (I've never been to AC so I'm not going to try and compare.)

Since you are used to living near Turning Stone, living in any of the towns just north of Foxwoods would be very similar. VERY rural, not much going on. I don't know the names of these towns, I just drive through them on the way to foxwoods after I get off I395 (I drive from Boston.)

I was going to suggest living in a southern Boston suburb(making your drive to foxwoods about an hour) but saw your previous post that you didn't want to drive that far.

One other idea would be southern Rhode Island (off I95 foxwoods is the 2nd exit into CT). Southern RI is also very rural and similar to the Turning Stone area and you could visit areas like Newport and the nightlife (what there is of it) in Providence.

As for the Foxwoods games, like most people said, the waits can be very long on the weekends, and I really don't know much about how many mid-to-high limit tables they really offer since I only play the 1/2NL and 2/4 Omaha.

Good luck in your decision

I have also been looking to move down closer to AC from North Jersey... rents are around $650- $800 for a 1
BR apt in AC just a block or 2 from the casinos and beach... As far as crime goes... AC is not exactly paradise but u can walk thru the city w/o having to dodge bullets in a gang war.. As far as action You can ALWAYS find a good small stekes game like 2/4 3/6 or 4/8 loaded w/ fish... never been to foxwoods but from what i understand it is the only casino in town... In AC if the taj is no good u can always leave and go to the borgata or Trop or the other crappy small cardrooms in town

I think that you should look into Brigantine. It's the next town North of AC (5 minutes from the Borgata). It's a nice town. Only problem is that it's not cheap. However, many of the casino execs live there, and with expansion of the casinos, it would probably be a good investment.

Yeah, you mostly just get stabbed. I have not urban-shy but the truth is AC is pretty bad in some spots. A lot of the bad press is somehow swept under the rug, but living in the area I have gotten a more realistic picture of things. It is not as bad as Camden or the worse areas of Newark, but it's certainly not a safe city. There is no real reason to live in the city when there are plenty of towns within 20 minutes that are much nicer/safer/etc.

I decided on Atlantic City after travelling to all NE Casinos including Turning Stone and Foxwoods.

Real Estate markets in the area have boomed. Much better chance of having something latter in life. Which is great for me!

I spend more time enjoying the sites than playing cards. Beach, biking, jogging, sauna, jacuzzi... Get the picture!

Basically if you are going to be playing cards every freaking day of your life you better have an escape valve which will keep you sane.

Just to be Devil's Advocate, real estate in the Northeast is already outrageous. Real estate in Las Vegas is, as I understand it, still somewhat reasonable (especially for Californians) but probably rising fast. In summary: your implied odds are a lot better investing in Vegas real estate, at least IMO.

It sounds like you've got a healthy balance of non-poker activities, though.

I have a few friends who live in South Jersey and the area is pretty nice. My one friend lives in an apartment complex in Pleasantville, it's not the nicest place (kinda ghetto) but the neighbors are friendly and it's just a 10 minute drive to AC. If you're playing full time, you're obviously making enough so that you can move to a much nicer area.

Plus, they have a ton of 24 hour bars down there. You can't go wrong with that.

I reckon you have a diversion of reasons of living near casinos.

Most of the folks who start these threads about living in AC, Conn, LV, LA are really asking about living in casinos.

I for that matter chose AC for a lot more reasons than just having a place to punt. When I bought my apartment in 1999 it was right at the low point of depressed real estate prices in the AC area. I guess all the folks had punted into the Internet Boom witch stocks which left a these place to be almost given away!

I had money that I had to put into something, and although I enjoyed going to AC it wasn't to play cards, but to go and do something that was completely different from my occupation (which was being a software engineer in the telecom industry). As it worked out the more I spent at AC the less time I really spent in the casinos.

Now back to this thread. I spend about 1 to 3 hrs on average playing poker.
Hardly liveable. I believe the initial poster is looking for a break or make period of 60-80 hours a week. (Is that sustainable???) Ok, maybe a little less.. Even the work week of 40 hours - your place of abode better give you a place where you can recover and reflect.

Anyway these threads are always interesting to read because most of the initial posters I think are the career choice level and that is not like me who has a career and is financially solvent (At least today...)
