Re: Will they ever get it?
[ QUOTE ]
Most people who play poker lose. Your friends and family are correct. They won't believe you until you buy a house with cash. [/ QUOTE ] Unless it's your wife, who cares.. (and even then sometimes...) I made my wife a beleiver, I keep spreadsheets with a stock-style line chart that goes up up up down up up down up up up up etc.. Bought some kickass xmas presents, nice valentines day gift, etc.. Wives are just like the IRS, they dont care as long as they get their cut! IDK who's cut is bigger tho Now she actually MAKES me play, she's seen me play 8 tables, and (jokingly) treats me like a slacker if I'm only playing 1 or 2. |

Re: Will they ever get it?
lol, know just how you feel. I'm a relative newbie (4mos, bonus chasing). As an early 40-something, stay at home, homeschooling, mother of four (ages 11-15), who also happens to hold a BS in EE from an earlier life, I have given up bringing up my bonus mongering habits to my friends. They react with a mixture of condenscension and pity, as if they're sure I'm hiding my loses and am on the verge of mortal sin (we're traditional Catholics). (I'm actually up 2400 since Feb 1 ). This response from my friends is really frustrating, but I gottta let it go. They are just reacting this way because they are uninformed and have no desire to be educated. On the other hand, my husband (who see's my win/loss spreadsheets) says 'Go, Babe! Good job' and has no prob with me spendng an hour or two in the eve playing poker. Well its been great venting. Thanks for the opportunity. Again, we've gotta let it go.

Re: Will they ever get it?
The one best thing I've found to work in cases like this is to tell them that with poker, you're not playing against the house, so they have no interest in who wins, they just take a rake. You're just playing against other players and taking their money.

Re: Will they ever get it?
My parents spent a good 2 hours trying to make me see how it is impossible to win in the long run because the casino has a statistical advantage over me.

[/ QUOTE ] I'm sorry, but when talking about poker, this is hilarious - if they kept saying this after you explained that you weren't playing against the casino, then they were clearly reading from a pamphlet. Re: Will they ever get it?
I'm at the point where I don't mention to anyone I play poker at all, let alone discuss my winnings. I think i'm going to resort to saying i'm a lackie clerk at Office Max, anyone (especially students) feel the same way?

They are correct in their concerns. Poker is gambling. Perhaps you have a problem you don't even recognize and their worries are sound.
You are exhibiting some classic addictive tendencies, according to your post. That doesn't mean you have a problem, obviously, but don't be so quick to dismiss relative's concerns. No one wants to think they have a gambling problem, and loss of money is NOT the only sign that you have one. Good luck! |
