if i'm dealt AK (suited or not), how far should i play these cards if i haven't made a pair yet and i think my opponent has a small or medium pair. i usually play until the turn, but if i dont hit anything i will fold if he bets into me. is this too weak?

Read the section on overcards in Small Stakes Hold'em (p221). There's no cut & dry answer to that question.

At 5/10??
I am preparing my jump up to 1/2, nervous about the opponents I'll meet there, but hands like this one gives me hope. olavfo |

There are a bunch of different factors involved in this, like the number of opponents, texture of the board, size of the pot, your position, and the chances that your opponent will fold a small or medium pair if you continue to bet.
There's no cut and dry formula for this. The best way to improve this part of your game is to experiment a little and really study your opponents' tendencies. When you get to 5/10 or higher online, the ability to show a profit with unimproved aces is very important. |
