Texas Station -- $4-$8: Mucking Top Pair on the Turn
Here's a hand from my Saturday night Texas Station session:
Typical Loose Passive Texas Station crowd $4-$8 (Blinds ($1 and $2). 4 limpers including SB...I'm in the BB with A [img]/forums/images/icons/diamond.gif[/img] Q [img]/forums/images/icons/heart.gif[/img] and checked....(You could make a case that I should have raised, but with this passive bunch, I felt I wanted to see the flop cheaply)...5 sees the flop Q [img]/forums/images/icons/club.gif[/img] J [img]/forums/images/icons/spade.gif[/img] 5 [img]/forums/images/icons/heart.gif[/img] .. I bet out....2 callers (Both calling stations) everyone else mucks Turn card is a 10 [img]/forums/images/icons/spade.gif[/img] I bet out again...first calling station mucks....second calling station raises. THe player is very passive even when he flops top pair...in the two hrs, I played with him, it was the first time I saw him raise...With that in mind, I believed I was looking at AK, 89, or a set...and even though I picked up a straight draw (and inside), I mucked my hand.... Is this best approach to a calling station who shows strength? I felt I didn't have enough outs to justify a call. Thanks in Advice [img]/forums/images/icons/spade.gif[/img] Remember, 9 days till Christmas! [img]/forums/images/icons/spade.gif[/img] |

I have a philosophy that applies well here. Its "Some people deserve your action, some people don't". In other words you MUST know you're behind here against this player, almost defenetely looking at a straight, estimate your pot odds and act accordingly - which most of the time means fold.

If he's as passive as you say, you can be sure he's not semi bluffing with something like Ksxs. Sounds like a good fold to me.

Seems like a good fold to me, how are you going to feel, after you call him twice, and the find out that he had AK, and you were drawing to 3 outs to chop.

Re: Texas Station -- $4-$8: Mucking Top Pair on the Turn
Wonder how your calling station reads you? Could he see you as a ram 'n jam with any hand? Would he raise you with KQ to see if you're bluffing ? Has he noticed that you can bet and fold hands if played back at? I've often spent two hours without being able to get aggressive at all, just because the flop / turn / river have totally missed me. I think you may have been a little too sure of your read folding so easliy.

Calling stations will not do this. Has he noticed that you can bet and fold hands if played back at? Calling stations do not pay attention to/take advantage of facts such as this. - JAA |

Re: Texas Station -- $4-$8: Mucking Top Pair on the Turn
I just wanted to suggest his read of the player as a calling station may be a bit off. I have been mistaken for a calling station myself, just because of the way the cards fell. I'm always interested in the way another player reads my read of them, (one level deeper). Seemed to me to be an awful good hand to muck if your read is just a little bit off.

I guess I should mention that he's a regular....so I've played him a few times....and he will only raise with strongs hands such as a hair 2 pair or higher....and will call down top pair if bet into...

I think this is a good lay down.Calling stations do not all of a sudden wake up and decide to raise two callers on the expensive street.Don't give unwarranted action to these players they don't deserve it.
