Whoops, overlooked this aspect. You have the best hand almost certainly. He has a flush draw, or possibly an ace / A-5. RERAISE.

as I'm sure many guessed I pushed, he called and showed 55. no AK on the turn/river and I'm busted.

I pretty much agree with everyone that I made the wrong decision at every juncture (pfr too small, flop bet too big, can't get away from top two) but it really felt like he was taking a shot at me given our recent history and the fact that there was only one hand out there that beat me and made sense for him to have. I really expected to see another big Ace (AQ), A5s or even something crazy like a royal draw (QdJd). I just hope I learned something.
