Re: Okay, I\'m looking to get a new laptop. Help me.
[ QUOTE ]
What actual difference does the processor make? What would I have to use it for to where it would become something that I should be concerned with? Just tryin to learn. [/ QUOTE ] Well, in my line of work, I do a lot of photo and video editing, use lots of office documents, watch TV on the computer, and generally do everything else possible that maximizes my computer's resources. Also, I'm a video game geek, so a faster processor is necessary there. If money is no issue, get the 8600. Quite frankly though, the 6000 will be more than sufficient. Toshiba M200/M205 = the nuts. Very light, small, 12.1" screen. 1450x1050 resolution, you can play 4 tables on here with VERY little overlap.

Not sure where you are looking, the 8600 was discontinued last week.

Now that the 8600 is discontinued... What\'s a good alternative?
I'm just discovering this since I recently started looking for a laptop. Now that it's hard to find, what's a good alternative to the 8600? I've been looking at the 9200... Any IBMs worth checking out? Other Dells?

Re: Now that the 8600 is discontinued... What\'s a good alternative?
If you want 4 tables with no overlap, the 6000 (15.4" screen) and the XPS (17", currently starting at $2249) are your only options from Dell. The 9200 is no longer offered in a 1920x1200 version.
Sony makes a nice 17" 1920x1200. I priced a decently equipped one for around $1750. Lost Wages |

Re: Now that the 8600 is discontinued... What\'s a good alternative?
A laptop can be nice, but the weight of it I think really makes a lasting effect. My 5100 is huge and I hate how much is does weigh. You should try looking at the 300m/600m/etc models. The P4-m processor makes the laptop more power efficient and a lot slimmer.

Re: Now that the 8600 is discontinued... What\'s a good alternative?
The 6000 is the replacement for the 8600 as far as Dell is concerned. You can customize it with the M Processors and a better video card. They are still a large footprint device, but they seem to do the trick. I am shopping for one as well and since work is paying for it, I found a way to run up the price to nearly 3k with all the goodies. Between the processor, hard drive and RAM improvements the price goes up quickly.

The 9200 is no longer offered in a 1920x1200 version [/ QUOTE ] that was a strangely short lifecycle for that one. i got a wuxga 9200 just before they dropped it. |
