I don't think it is silly, I think it is a good question.

The way I feel about it, new players will come to holdem, maybe even NL and SnGs first, then branch out to other games, that is what I did, limit holdem is actually one of the last games I learned (well, still can't play stud).

It is popular in Europe. In the US it's been on the decline for the last 15 years. I still don't think it's declining in numbers relative to hold'em.
