Pocket Nines
I recently read (in a Sept 2004 CardPlayer article) a poker pro, whos name I can't remember right now, says that he likes playing pocket nines because they made a set 68% of the time. He even joked that he and his buddies called pocket nines a "pocket set". In my research (Mike Petriv's Hold'em Odds Book) any pocket pair will make a set 10.8% of the time on the flop, 4.4% with one card to come, and 19% of the time if you take them all the way to the river. What makes pocket nines so special? Am I misunderstanding?

Re: Pocket Nines
nothing makes nines special, you have a chance to hit a set roughly 12% of the time on the flop.

Re: Pocket Nines
That is what I figured. Just leaves me wondering why he said that. Thanks for the reply.

Re: Pocket Nines
Selective memory,
I have played a 6 hour session at party before and had 88 four times, they made a set everytime!!!... So in that session I could say: I love 88 because they make me a set 100% of the time. Regards D. sure it wasnt Phil Helmuth? |

Re: Pocket Nines
If any one sees this, or cares for that matter, I looked up the magazine again and the player who made the statement about the pocket nines is David Williams. Pretty good player as I understand.

[/ QUOTE ] Would you mind posting the part of the article where he mentions that? A guy like Williams shouldn't be saying crap like that. Maybe it was poorly worded or something. B |

Re: Pocket Nines
A matter of semantics I suppose. It seems to me there is still some ambiguity present. You make a good point though. Even if the quote is slightly out of context the entire statement may have been a joke.
