It's strange. I'm a big time old school hip hop listener, but I do not enjoy listening to hip hop while I'm playing. It's distracting, and not in a good way.
When I think I have to listen to music while playing (which isn't that often), I'll load up a playlist of all of Radiohead's albums and shuffle, or I'll do the same with Elliot Smith. Just recently got turned onto Robert Randolph, and that went pretty well too.
Sometimes I'll just play some hip hop mixes from the BBC on low and hope I enter the 'zone' or something. It seems I prefer the instrumentally inclined music.
