Right, TheCat may have a betting tell that makes this play a loser for him. [/ QUOTE ] Which might be an excellent argument for betting a set amount after you raise, regardless of the flop; say 2/3 the pot. Kurto's right, though... it all depends on position and number of callers. Lotta variables here, like what hands do you usually raise? How savvy are your opponents? How tight or tricky are your opponents? Sounds like you might be better off only raising AK in late position, and just surprising people with it in early position (which can be very profitable; people rarely expect to see AK in an unraised pot from early position). Regarding bluffing, you might want to at least try it more often with one or two tight or weak-passive opponents. -NC |

Re: Bluffing in small stakes games.
Don't forget, AK can miss the flop and still be best hand, so you may not be bluffing. And if someone happens to catch bottom or middle pair on the flop and you bet out, what's their move?

4) What's your position?
Thats the key to playing a bluff with AK(or j2o for that matter) when you show aggression preflop. |

Thanks everyone, some good stuff here. I'm convinced by your posts that I need to loosen up some in this situation.

Re: Bluffing in small stakes games.
Well, there's bluffing and bluffing. Betting the flop with nothing after raising isnt what I consider bluffing. That's just standard stuff.
Other than that, stay away from bluffing - unless you're up against someone you know have the ability to think and lay down medium pair no kicker with 4 flush on the board. |

Re: Bluffing in small stakes games.
Do you ever raise with mediocre hands like 9 T suited ? I do this every now and then. 9 T suited has flush and straight potential so its a good hand to raise with and mix your play up. I emptied someone's stack the other day since he put me on A K and board was Q J 8 X X . I'm sure he was surprised when I flipped T 9 over. Try it. That way your opponents won't know if you hit something or not.
