What's with this new spam mail?

The cost to send an email message is effectively zero. This is one of the reasons that SPAM email is so pernicious. There is no incentive for spammers to target their messages. They just send them to every email address that they can get ahold of. So, the viagra adds go to young men, women and children. Ditto porn site ads, ads for prescription narcotics, and ads for penis enlarging herbal concoctions.

For direct (snail) mail or telemarketing, there is more cost to send the message. For direct mail, they have to print the add, put it in an envelope, and pay postage. For telemarkting there are phone charges and they have to pay somebody to make the pitch. So they are at least going to try to get the message to somebody who might possibly buy what they are selling. With email, they don't have to bother.
