Explain $10 + 1

Newbie question:

What does it mean to be buying into a $10 + 1 MTT?
What is the $10 for and what is the $1 for, and is the $1 payable more than once?
Haven't come across an explanation for it anywhere here.

It means $10 goes towards the prizepool, and $1 goes to the casino.
