Defending the Small Blind
Looking for input on my range of hands when defending the small blind. Assume that the CO or button opens (button folds in the case of the CO), they are average stealers (30%-35%) and play decently postflop. I reraise these hands or better, folding all others:
Pairs: 55 Suited: A2s/K9s/Q9s/J8s/T9s Offsuit: A9/KT/QJ (19.6% of all hands) Comments appreciated, Lost Wages |

Re: Defending the Small Blind
I don't see the point of defending with crap like J8s, Q9s, T9s . . . you're going to be HU out-of-position (ohmygod, I'm channeling rory) against someone who probably has a better hand %-wise, unless it's a complete utter steal with any two cards.
I defend my BB quite liberally . . . my SB, not so much. |

Re: Defending the Small Blind
Some of the hands at the bottom of your range look a bit iffy to me, but maybe I'm too tight. I would definitely at least call (or raise) with all of these in the BB, but defending in the SB with J8s, QJ, or low PPs when you're in the SB seems a little much. Hard to play postflop unless you catch something on the flop out of position. I like the reraise though, since that way you should get rid of the BB. Do your standards change if you know the BB is loose and will coldcall alot?

Re: Defending the Small Blind
I would 3-bet A8o earlier than QJo. I 3-bet:
Pairs: 44 Suited: A8s, KJs, QJs Offsuit: ATo, KJo Thanks, Guido |

Yes, I would simply fold more. I don't think that just calling from the small blind against a steal is ever correct but I could be wrong . Lost Wages |

Re: Defending the Small Blind
Which blind structure? 3/6, 5/10, 10/20, 15/30?
I think you're defending with too many suited hands. |

Sorry, good point, it's 5/10. I think you're defending with too many suited hands. You may be right, that's what I'm hoping to find out . Thanks, Lost Wages |

Re: Defending the Small Blind
my standards are a good bit tighter than this, I tend to spew chips postflop with a hand like QJ that missed and taking the preflop initiative by 3 betting (which I also always do) usually gets me in situations like this.
