What would you tell my friend to do here?
I was watching a friend of mine play while watching TV last night and he was asking me questions when he needed help. Anyway the following hand came up, and I have no reads on any players because im not paying attention. My friend has no reads on any players either.
NL .25/.5 6max partypoker hero($45) K [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] K [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] villian($24.5) villian limps UTG UTG+1 limps hero on button makes it $1.75 villian is only caller flop($4.75) Q [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 8 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 5 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] villian checks hero bets $3 villian calls turn($10.75) 5 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] villian checks hero bets $4 villian calls river($18.75) 2 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] villian goes all in for $15.75. This is when I get called over to help my friend make a quick decition. I am not really to familliar with the party 6max nl 25 table or how well the players play. What would you advise my friend to do here? results: My friend folded |

Re: What would you tell my friend to do here?
I'd call. But i'm not sure really whether in the long-run you are better off either way. If you play this hand against a random 25NL opponent a 1000 times, you might end up with the same result whether you call it or fold it every time. More often than not your hand is not good, but this is a bluff just often enough to make calling a worthwhile option. And for metagame reasons calling may help you prevent future bluffs.

Re: What would you tell my friend to do here?
Raise more pre-flop. With two limpers, I make it $2.50. On the flop, I bet at least $4, maybe the full pot of $4.75. That turn bet of $4 is pointless. It's an expensive check. Having played it the way you did, I call and kick myself for having misplayed it up until that point, although I have a feeling that you're ahead here often enough for it to be profitable.
EDIT: Now that I think about it, I have a feeling that the 5 on the turn improved your hand. I don't know much about PP players, but I have a feeling that your Ks and 5s beat his Qs and 8s. |

Re: What would you tell my friend to do here?
first villain limped from UTG, and then called HERO's preflop bet.
he also called hero's bet on the flop. At this point we can rule out any hand with a 5 short of 55 or 22, I just don't see villain calling with those preflop and on the flop. We can rule out QQ as I think he would have raised preflop with it. Therefore, on the end, the only likely hand that beats Hero that villain would do this with is a slow played 88 that boated up on the turn. I am willing to call here due to stacksize considerations. Also, notice how the 5s counterfeit a hand like Q8. |

He may have easily called with A5s or even 56s or 57s on the flop just to see whether you will slow down or whether he can improve or catch a draw. So I think you will see a five somewhat often here. Not often enough to fold though. I think you are right that Q8 or Qx will be shown down alot. I agree that the paired fives make this call much easier than I thought originally. |

hmm good point on the calling because they put you on Aj-AK.

Re: What would you tell my friend to do here?
I would tell your friend to make a real raise PF (4XBB + 1XBB/limper). Then I would tell him to make larger bets on the flop and certainly on the turn ($4??). As he played it, I think I call and expect to be ahead, but real bets sure could help this hand.
