Can you tell your parents that you are going to do your own taxes?

I want to tell her but I fear the $6872.74 (low because of some recent big purchases) that is currently sitting in my bank account won't be enough to subvert her possible anger when she finds out I was playing illegally.

How mad is she going to be when she finds that out you owe $8000+ on taxes and you only have $6872.74 left?

Damn, what state do you live in? Remind me to never move there. How's that 15% State Tax treating you?

(He said he made ~20k. 8k is aproaching 50%.)

It's 40%, and that's not too far off if he were in a higher tax bracket.

That's not the point tho. When someone says "I've made at least an estimated 20k", it sounds like he doesn't know how much he made, but it's 20k at a minimum. Is 25k or 30k really that unlikely?

It sounded like he thought his mom would be impressed with his 6800. At best, he owes the vast majority of that in taxes. At worst, he owes more. Either way, she ain't going to be impressed.
