I don't know that I three-bet A8s, then call on the river with only one club.

Check/call the flop. Let him hang himself if he is thin. If he has no pair/no draw or a pocket he is in bad shape. You hand has showdown value here as well. Notice that the K on board really helps your cause if you are outkicked (lots of ways to a chop).
