Should a novice Limit player try No Limit tournaments?
Hi,
I've been playing live small to mid stakes Limit Holdem for about 6 months. I've read 5 or 6 books on the subject and use Turbo Texas Holdem regularly. I've been pretty successful in live casino play. I'm tempted to start reading No Limit Tournament books and trying my hand at that, but I'm wondering if I should continue to focus exclusively on Limit. Do you think that switching games at this point would adversely effect my Limit progress, or is there room for both? |

There is room for mixed limit/no-limit play. SNG's are probably the best structure to get your feet wet with no-limit play.

Re: Should a novice Limit player try No Limit tournaments?
I don't know where you live, but my guess is that you will hate the majority of No Limit tournaments. From my experience most NL live tournaments are held at times when the card room is not getting any other action and uses the tournament to fill up the tables in hopes that players will stay to play ring games once they bust out. The best way for them to do that is to offer a quick (read: crappy) structure that will get the tournament over quickly. You will typically see limits increasing every 15 minutes which makes solid play pretty difficult.

I live in the Northeast and usually go to Foxwoods. My question was actually because I'm thinking of going to Howard Lederer's Poker Camp. I'm starting to understand some of the finer points of Limit and was wondering if switching gears to No Limit tourneys would through off my Limit play.

Some people have problems keeping knowledge that is superficially similar properly separated, if you are one of them it might throw your game off a bit. But in general it shouldn't be a problem.
