poker chip denomination question

Hi

I will be ordering a set of Nevada Jacks Desert Sands chips next week and I was wondering about how many of each denomination I should get.

We normally play tournament style games with blinds starting at $25/$50 and going up each half hour. We usually have 6 - 8 players.

I was thinking of ordering either 400 or 500 chips (500 will be stretching my budget a bit though). Does any one have any suggestions on the amount of each denomination I should get? I was thinking something like this:

For 400 chips:
$25 - 125
$100 - 150
$500 - 75
$1000 - 50

For 500 chips:
$25 - 150
$100 - 200
$500 - 100
&1000 - 50

Are those breakdowns any good? I'm new to this so would appreciate any feedback.

Either one should do you fine.

You didn’t mention the starting $ amount or whether your are doing re-buys but in a typical scenario if you start each player with T$1000 then they get 8 $25’s and 8 100’s. This is 64 of each out. In your 400-chip count that leaves 86 100’s for rebuys and color ups.

If I was going to change anything I’d get 50 each of the 500’s and 1000’s and get 25 more 25’s

First I think you should buy chips without a printed denomination. There are several reasons for that.

Second I think its likely you want an equal amont of the two smallest chips (or even more of the smallest).

Third; Maybe you have a tad to many of the highest valued chip. The value of them will exceed the total value of the other chips by a lot so you do not really need that many.
In your first example your two lowest chips are worth 18,125 while you have 50,000 in your biggest chip. Unless you have really many rebuys going on I dont think you need that many. 25 will usually do.

Reasons for not having a printed value on the chip are that you get

* "stuck" with that value for that particular chip
* colouring up becomes more tricky if not even impossible
* with just colours you can asign the various chips various values depending upon the game and buyins
* I quote: "Do not get denominations ($5, $100) printed on your chips as these numbers might be meaningless 50 years from now when you pass your chips on to your grandson. I don't reccomend getting a lower count of your 1st denom than your 2nd. It seems to make sense but you are better off doing something like 40% 30% 20% 10%. In a tourney, you really need to give 10 chips of the lowest denom to each player.

You can also base it somewhat on what you do most. For example, I have an octagonal table so I got 160 chips so everyone could have 20 of the lowest.

Do you ever play cash games? I never liked denoms because I do both.

I dont really play cash games at the moment and I've got some chips without denoms for that.

Based on what I've learned from yours and the other replies I've got so far I'm thinking of changing the breakdown to something like the following for 400 chips

$25 - 150
$100 - 150
$500 - 50 (or 75)
$100 - 50 (or 25)

And then if you like the chips and want to play cash games with them one day, you can buy 150 whites and 150 reds...
