When you DON\'T want a calling station at your table
Sorry, I've just got to vent for a second -- and this is not a bad beat story in the usual sense.
$3-6, full table, casino has a high-hand promotion going every hour worth $300. Both cards in your hand must play, but you don't have to go to the river. I'm in the big blind with 9-6, flop comes 9-9-9. If I can get everyone to fold here, I've got the high hand (with about three minutes left in the hour). They're liberal about letting players give hints, so I bet and say to the table, "Get out." Everyone does except one guy. Turn is a 5, so both of my cards still play and I'm good. I bet again and say, "Don't do it. Get out." He calls, saying to the guy next to him, "He's probably got quads." River is a Queen. My kicker doesn't play anymore. I don't think he even had a pair. $300 down the drain. I know it's his money to put in, but am I wrong to be pissed at him? Everyone else at the table was. |

In the longrun, you will make much more than $300 of this player. If you think about it, if you don't win it, wouldn't you like him to? It's not like you're not going to get a share from whoever wins that thing. b btw...I remember clearly when I won my JP, first things first, I was just happy to have finally won a pot against the guy I was against. I was getting killed by him all night. Another thought: What if this guy was up for the JP with quad 8s? Would it have made a difference then? Just another angle to think about whether pertinent or not. What if you were the one with the 8s and he flopped the 9s? |

Re: When you DON\'T want a calling station at your table
I wonder if you could have said something like "Hey, do you know about that high hand promo they're running? Both cards have to play. So lets pretend one were to hit quads with a weak kicker, he would want people to fold while his kicker is still good. I am not saying that THIS is the CASE right NOW, but it would be a shame if someone called a person in that situation with a weak hand and ruin it for him."

I say offer to toss him a green chip to fold. And that casino's rules are dumb; only one card should need to play

If you're really that desperate to get him to fold, you could just flip your cards over and let him see what you have as you're betting into him.

[/ QUOTE ] I know I'm not playing for JPs, but this was a guaranteed JP if the guy had just folded. That's what made it so maddening. And yes, the thought that I'll make much more than $300 off this guy alone in the long run was one of the thoughts I used to keep myself (somewhat) calm. As for how I would feel if I had quad 8s and someone else was in my situation with the 9s, I did wonder about the ethics of trying to get everyone to fold. Greed, however, won out in this instance. I thought you could only flip your cards up on the river betting when it's HU?

Re: When you DON\'T want a calling station at your table
The floor told me my hand would have been declared dead if I had turned it up while there was still action. I thought that might be the case, which is why I didn't do it.
