Default Is there any way to defend a set in late position?

UTG+2 is LAG (96 VP$IP, 12 PFR), MP1 is Loose/Passive.

Party Poker 0.5/1 Hold'em (10 handed) converter

Preflop: Hero is MP3 with 7[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], 7[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img].
UTG folds, UTG+1 folds, UTG+2 calls, MP1 calls, MP2 calls, Hero calls, CO folds, Button folds, SB completes, BB checks.

With so many callers, I figured it was worth a limp, but not a raise.

Flop: (6 SB) 7[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], 5[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], 8[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (6 players)
SB checks, BB checks, UTG+2 checks, MP1 checks, MP2 checks, Hero bets, SB calls, BB calls, UTG+2 calls, MP1 calls, MP2 calls.

Being in late position, I have no opportunity to C/R, and no one has bet out, so I figured I had to lead.

Turn: (6 BB) Q[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (6 players)
SB checks, BB checks, UTG+2 checks, MP1 checks, MP2 checks, Hero bets, SB folds, BB calls, UTG+2 calls, MP1 calls, MP2 folds.

Again, no bettors and I am all alone in aggression.

River: (10 BB) J[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (4 players)
BB checks, UTG+2 checks, MP1 bets, Hero calls, BB folds, UTG+2 calls.

Nothing to do but call.

Final Pot: 13 BB

Is there any other way to play this? Should I have checked the flop and hoped someone would bet at it?

Thanks.

Preflop is fine.

Bet out on the flop and the turn, raise the river and call a reraise. If the person has T9 or diamonds, so be it. There's no reason you're necessarily behind here at the river. (Actually, I'm unsure of the raising part, but that's what I would do).

Gosh, you flopped a set and you sound so depressed...

I disagree. With two players to act behind I'd go for overcalls, and not risk opening myself up to a 3-bet from that bastard MP1 if he has a straight or flush.

Yeah, my bad. Didn't realize how straightening that board was...

Nice hand.

Good to know that I wasn't totally off my noodle.

BTW, MP1 rolled over T9s for the straight.

Thanks for the comments.
