This is really opponent dependent. Against some players you should bet the turn and check the river, and against others you should check the turn and call the river. Against most you should check the turn and fold the river to a bet.

Your line isn't "bad" per se, but against this player I would check the turn in situations like this in the future.

So far he was playing pretty tight. I thought I might have been able to get him to fold on the turn.

Bet the turn against tight players who will fold a hand like 77 (fearing a flush or that you have a King or whatever).

Check the turn/call the river against players who bluff too much on the river. You will be albe to spot these players easily.

Check the turn/fold the river against players who will call down with any kind of a made hand, and are too timid to bluff on the end. This is pretty much the default low limit player assuming that you have good table selection.
