[ QUOTE ]
When he came back over the top allin, he cannot possibly think there's any chance in hell that Phil is folding. A 7th grade math student could figure that out. Was this guy exhibiting some sort of mental disorder? [/ QUOTE ] Maybe he thought he had the best hand, LOL. |

If he thought he had the best hand there against a tight player like Hellmuth while he was holding an AJ he's a friggin Donkey. If he made the play without realizing there was no folding equity...hes a friggin donkey. If he just was getting impatient saw an Ace- face an said he was pushing no matter what...he was playing like a donkey.

Hellmuth wants a WPT trophy in the worst way. That was a bad suckout. Hence Phil went ballistic. He can't help it, and it makes for good TV (Even though it isn't the final table, I bet WPT shows it). Personally I have more respect for players like Howard Lederer who take bad beats without a whimper, but it doesn't make for stellar TV.

This is going a bit off topic ... but speaking of Howard Lederer (and Phil), at the Tournament of Champions thing, remember Howard berating Phil for not calling with AQ which then made it reasonable for Howard to call with his AJ -- that was one of the few times I've ever seen Howard mad at someone on TV. VERY funny. Phil even manages to get a nice-all-the-time-guy like Howard miffed.

was that before or after Hellmuth likened Lederers play to amateurs: betting out and then hitting the belly-buster...

Personally i wouldn't make the play, but i don't think it was THAT bad as people are making out. If you constantly fold to reraises you wont get all that far playing 2 hands I would have thought as presumably these are the only two hands you could call a reraise with. Maybe Hiatt felt the raise was so big hellmuth had a weakish pocket pair and felt like gambling ? maybe hellmuth had been showing weak bluffs or had a tendancy to overraise with small/mid pp and hiatt felt this was the moment to go for it, if hellmuth did indeed have say 88 or 99 he might well fold fearing an overpair. I hope i dont get abuse from this point of view as really i think his play was kinda weak but my point being it just wasnt THAT bad :-)

Ah. For some reason I have a picture in my mind of them being at different ends of the table, but maybe it was short handed at the time?

I was standing right behind Phil when this happened and it wasn't that big of a deal. He ranted around the room for five minutes then sat down. I've seen worst. And who could blame him on a suck out like that.
And I'm not that big a fan of his. franco |
