David Sklansky is sending me to Monte Carlo
Well not exactly, but here's what happened. I have been experimenting with the "system" described in Tournament Poker for Advanced Players for a week or so. I had been doing pretty well. I decided to use it in a PokerStars online satellite to the European Poker Tour Grand Final in Monte Carlo. I WON! The good folks at Stars will spot me money for the airfare, pick up the room and cover the 10,000 Eurodollar buy in. Wow. This will be my first time playing poker in a casino. Advice anyone? David, many thanks, I could not have done it without you.

Congratulations!!! Out of curiosity, how many times did you get called? Seems unlikely that the system could win w/out at least a few suckouts in the current poker age where ATo is concidered by some to be a great starting hand.

I was called 10 times. I won 9. I had two big suck outs but actually most of the time when I was called; I had the best of it preflop. Thanks for the good wishes.

[/ QUOTE ] Do you remember what you got called by? One of the strengths of the system when it was written was that tournament pros would gladly toss away JJ or AT to all-in raises. Nowadays, someone with as little as 22 can call and bust you on a coin flip. The more callers you get in a tournament, the more likely it is to bust out, favorite or no. That's why some of us here are surprised that the system took you to 1st place.

The fact that someone won a single tournament playing "The System" shouldn't be a shock. If someone one consistently, then that would be amazing. And people often forget that it is designed for major tournaments when you are outclassed by professionals.

Congrats on the win. I'll be in that tournament too, after qualifying a few weeks ago. I didn't use "the system", only played poker. I think it is more fun...
Anyway, I think this is the first time (posted around here) someone is actually *winning* a tourney with the system, and not just toying with it and busting at some point. You say you were called 10 times and won 9. How many times did you push and all folded? What were the hands in the 10 times you were called? I'm interested because I would like to see how much "luck" was involved in this "system" win. Winning 9 out of 10 showdowns in a tourney, simply looks like an absolutely fantastic ratio... I'm not "accusing" you for being lucky, you need luck to win a tournament, no matter what is your strategy, so it's not a problem. I just wander how big was the role of luck in such a rigid way of play, that obviously leaves you very very small room to exploit other people's mistakes (and it was actually designed for someone who knows nothing about poker, IIRC).

[/ QUOTE ] Winning 9/10 seems a little lucky but not too unreasonable to me. You are pushing with big aces and large pocket pairs. As long as you don't get called by AA or KK, you are going to be in a bunch of coinflips and situations where you dominate them. People get annoyed with the allins and tend to lower thier calling standards. The luck is in having the bigger stack when you lose those coinflips.
