The wife and I spent nearly a week in Vegas the week after Thanksgiving. I'll just post the poker-related stuff here, since I'm working on a travelogue for our web page and have a lot to do there (posting pics and the rest of the notes).
Stayed at Bally's in the North Tower. Decent enough rooms and fairly cheap with deal from travelocity. Comments and some hands from each room I played in: Bally's This is a fairly small "room" situated on one edge of the main casino. Maybe 6 tables? Got a 2/4 seat immediately. Fairly average competition (from my point of view). Had AA called down to the river by two callers once. QQ called down by a Kx who hit a river K. Hit runner-runner 2 pair with my AJ when no one bet the flop of K72 rainbow (should have bet it myself, but the turn J and river A were bet by me and called by 2 others). Ended up down $5. Bellagio Very nice room! Comfy seats, excellent dealers, fast service. Played 4/8. Ended up down $60 after 3 hours of play due to lack of cards (or perhaps I still am a rock after all). Only hand of note was me with AJ, flopped Jxx (one diamond) bet and called by 2. Turn was a rag diamond, I bet and one caller. River another rag diamond, bet, raised and I folded. Opponent happily showed his 2 small diamonds. Horseshoe Only played here for about an hour and lost $15. Very dark room, but it's in an otherwise empty corner of the casino, so it was quieter than most. Luxor Only played here because we were touring the south strip casinos and the wife needed a rest. Decent enough room, but the rake is high and there's a jackpot as well - hard to beat that. Lost $19, mostly due to trips being beat by river straights twice (of course I was betting out every time). Mirage This was my one extravagence this trip. Played in the $130 Tuesday NLHE tournament. I managed to resist rebuy fever during the first hour (mainly by folding a lot). Took the $100 addon. Played the second hour more aggressively, stealing a few binds and winning a pot or two. Made the second break with $2200. Third hour was fairly brutal. Doubled up once, but mostly folded my way to the 3rd break. Had about 30 left with blinds at 250/500 and me with a measly $2800. About 4 hands in (and 3 dropped players), pick up A10 in the BB. Button attempts a steal, with enough to put me all in. He's been very aggressive when on the button and could have anything, so I call and he tables KJs. An ace flops (yay!), but then I realize that all 3 flop cards match his suit (boo!) and I'm out 27th out of about 100. Had a great time and am starting to realize that maybe I'm better at no-limit than limit... Excalibur This was my "poker day" for the trip. There were no 1-3 games yet (it was before 2PM, when the lessons occur), so I sat down at a 2-6 spread limit game. First hand picked up 44, 4 players see a flop for one bet. Flop is 459 rainbow. I bet out and get only 1 caller. Turn is a 5 giving me the boat. I bet out and opponent calls. River is a 9. You can see where this is going. I bet, he raises and I just have to pay to see his 95. After an hour I finally realize that I'm the only one sitting at the table who *isn't* a local, so I leave down $85. I leave for a bit to cool off and have a bite to eat. Come back later and sit at a 1-3 spread table. Lost another $40 in the next 4 hours, getting absolutely no playable hands. Not one. Really... Had fun though! A guy from Montana shows up at the table and is at least 15 sheets to the wind. I mean he's gone! This guy had only 2 plays: Bet 3 or Raise 3. Seriously - he never folded or called (unless betting was capped and the dealer had to tell him so). I had no hand that I thought was worth at least $50 (by the river). The guy went through 3 racks of chips before I left and he was still playing - I would've given anything for a face card... Anyway - that's it. Note that I played mostly during the day (hard to not do that with a wife who doesn't much like to gamble). Next trip will be a guy trip where we'll keep normal poker hours so I can play against the drunks all night long. Although I lost at every session, I didn't lose as much as I had planned on, so I like to count that as a win (that's what I keep telling myself after such a dismal performance - it helps me sleep at night). Once the travelogue for the rest of the trip is up, I'll let y'all know. |

Yeah, but note:
[ QUOTE ] Had fun though! [/ QUOTE ] Going to Vegas and losing is acceptable to a lot of people. You go there for the "experience" and if you can afford to lose it, then you can still have fun. Not to say that you don't realize that, but many people get all bent out of shape about that. |

That's bs!!!! People dont come here to lose. Ask anyone of them, lol. The answer is always "well I would have had fun if I won money" or something like that, when in reality you know that they had a good time. Must be the confusion from the travel channel that they depict everyone that comes to Vegas is a "winner".
I am glad he had fun on his trip. Trying to figure out where and when I want to take my next trip out of Vegas, lol. |

Exactly! Had plenty of fun even though I lost every time. This wasn't really a *serious* poker trip - we saw plenty of other things while there (even left the strip once to see Red Rock Canyon), so it was still a good time. Next time will be different - I swear! :-)

Well of course I *contemplated* not mentioning the amounts... But any poker player unable to admit to his losses will likely be a loser for life.
I really *do* think that my no-limit game is better - though it might be that I'm just more comfortable with it. Most of my online play is SnGs rather than ring games. Sadly, there are relatively few SnGs in the real world... |
