This is a sad story. This may sound uncompassionate, but are you going to ask his parents for the $400?

I just read about a guy who was going to kill himself now this.
Poker/gambling is a last resort for some people, they are unhappy with life so they go to gambling and hope to make it big. They dont have the mental discipline to be able to be successful so they start borrowing money, eventually they end up in the gutter. If a gambler asks to borrow money then go talk to his family/friends and get him/her help. |

First of all, very sorry about your loss. That's horrible. All my thoughts and prayers, man.
I guess what some people have a hard time understanding - like those of us who don't have compulsive and/or addictive personality traits - is that, for some people, whether it's alcohol, drugs, sex, and, yes, even poker, it's a frickin' disease. You can't stop. No matter how much you want to, you HAVE to keep drinking ... or playing. I would say that being addicted to online poker might even be WORSE than drugs or alcohol. And before you blast me on this, HEAR ME OUT, PLEASE ... with alcohol and drugs, there's a good chance your behavior will follow you to work, your personal relationships, etc. You'll show your disease outside of your home and, thus, maybe have a better opportunity for some help and intervention because someone sees you drunk on the job, baked on the job or on a date, whatever. When you're in your own room gambling away tons of money, by yourself, and you keep losing and getting more depressed, that might be tougher for your friends and family to sniff out. Thus, harder to get some help because you really do feel all alone ... and no one suspects you need help. Not sure if there's an answer, but I guess we all just need to be a little more careful ... like the title of this string suggests. Again, sorry for your loss. |

I was about to talk about how classless it is to post in all caps, but I decided that would be in bad taste.
Anyhow, I'm sorry to hear about your friend. For anyone who is down about losing a whole bunch of money, there is one thing that I know of that is an instant cure for dark, obsessive thoughts. Do something nice for somebody. Doesn't have to be anything big, just something. Without drawing attention to yourself, too. |
