20/40 Chicago-casino ATs in BB
I've been playing for a few hours and have established myself as a tight player, aggressive when holding a good hand.
I'm sitting in the BB with ATs. One MP limps and CO limps. SB raises. SB is a decent player, but when raising in the SB, he is most likely raising with a premium hand (probably AKs, AA, KK, QQ, JJ). I call, MP and CO call. Flop comes A, T, x (rainbow). SB bets, I call, planning to raise the turn. MP and CO both call. Turn comes J (still rainbow). SB bets, I raise. MP 3-bets, CO cold-calls 3-bets!!. SB caps. What is my play here? (Results in white) I show my neighbor (friendly guy...we've been chatting a bunch throughout session), shake my head, and fold. River comes T completing my boat (though I folded). SB bets out again. MP raises. CO cold-calls 2 bets. SB 3-bets. MP and CO call. SB shows JJ for Jacks full. MP shows ATs for Tens full. CO shows KQs for nut straight. Everyone finds out that I folded ATs on turn for 2BBs and chastize me for folding the hand. The way I figure it was that I had very few outs if any at all. I put SB on a good hand, at the _VERY_ least (though unlikely), AJs, and other more likely hands after turn action were AA, JJ, KQs. I put MP on AT, AA, JJ, or KQ (or small set). I put CO on AT, JJ, or KQ (or small set). With these possible hands, I had almost no outs except the A or T both of which could be dead, especially if someone else had an A (reducing my outs). Did I play poorly? What was the correct action with 17BBs in the pot (most likely both MP and LP were calling to make 19BBs in pot) and having to call 2BBs? |

Perfectly played, IMO. You are getting only 8.5 to 1 on the turn, with 4 outs max, possibly drawing dead. Unless these are complete maniacs, you did good.
Edit: Actually although I like the turn fold, raising the flop would be better; you need to make KQ, KJ, or QJ pay to draw to their gutshot. |

With that action in that game (Harrah's, right?), I think folding is the right play. With the semi coordinated board, however, I'd have raised the flop.

I'd be more inclined to put the limpers on KQo KQs and JT than the hands you mentioned, but your play is right.

The best case scenario is that you're drawing to four outs. Given the turn action, I think two outs or less is more likely. I think this is a good fold.

You're worst play was showing anyone your cards. On a very rare occasion (when I'm on tilt?), I'll do it too and it's just wrong, wrong, wrong! My new year's resolution is to not show a single hand I don't have to for the entire year of 2005. Not one! I'm looking forward to it.

Re: 20/40 Chicago-casino ATs in BB
Good turn play. I agree with the poster that you should raise the flop to eliminate gutshots. They would have a hard time calling getting around 6:1 with the risk that SB is going to three-bet. If he does three-bet, you can just call and blow them out on the turn, which I think is better than capping the flop since they will call that too with a gutter.
I do it sometimes too so I am writing this for my benefit, but I think we would be better off if we resisted the temptation to show guys our hands. An air of mystery, keep em guessing, is better. |

Beyond not showing anyone my cards, I resolve to implement a suggestion I read here a while back . . . In response to "Did you have . . . ?" I will ALWAYS reply, "Yes."
