Re: awkward AK hand
i'd call. if you hit a pair, i think you should be content to go the felt. if button raises, fold.
what do people think of the pre-flop? |

Re: awkward AK hand
Lately I've been wondering if I have been overplaying AK. I think against this many players I'd be tempted to fold preflop, figuring to be against no less than one pocket pair. I think I'd call if they were suited though.
Comments appreciated. |

It's very easy for throw away money to be doing this with a dominated ace, (Or, gasp, a dominated king) for folding to be wrong. The question is do you want to reraise to isolate or call and hope to check it down. On the flop you're getting immediate odds of 11 to 1, with 6 outs which may or may not be clean. The problem is you have a guy behind you, and the pot is protected; to the effect that it's not typical a man would dry side bluff for something that is essentially worth nothing. (Although some people do this anyways, much to my displeasure) I would re-raise pf, they are just flat calling, with all the dead money you're giving yourself a great overlay if they fold vs the all in guy. (Plus you likely have the best hand) Given you called I would call the flop bet and fold if button raised. If I didn't pair the turn I would fold to any further betting. The problem with calling the flop is you're basically drawing dead t oa set, so you're hoping the bettor has a OP under A or K. |

Re: awkward AK hand
I kind of agree with bobbo here. I like a pf reraise to isolate. He could be going all in with very poor holdings. The fact that button/unknown dont reraise shows weakness, in my opinion. They could be coming along with any pair, or a dominated ace. Make it $40 straight and they are pretty much forced to fold any holding worse than QQ(except AK).
As it played out, i like just calling his $5 bet. Youre getting good odds to draw to your pair, assuming button doesnt get fancy. Another line Im also tempted to take is raise, maybe to 25, to knock out the button, take your fold equity against the unknown (who, for all we know, could be betting his AK, AQ). If he flat calls youre $25, you can check behind the turn unimproved. If he raises you, you can fold. |

Re: awkward AK hand
i like your line on the flop, i think that was the best play given the the opportunity to pick up all the dead money from the pot.
the problem, imo, with reraising PF, is that it just SCREAMS ak. AK is about the only hand that you will see people call a raise with preflop, and then reraise when someone pops it back. i would be tempted to play any pair for $40 against someone who who bet like that and push if there was no A or K on the flop. i suppose this might be a situation where i'm giving my opponents a little too much credit for hand reading, but i would DEFINATELY notice that AK is about the only possible holding if i was in their shoes. |

i called the $5. button raised to $25, original bettor called, i folded. turn was a queen, check check. river an ace, check check. button won with pocket jacks.
