I think it also depends on the caliber of the tournament as well. I've folded into the money in quite a few freerolls.

if its mostly just luck, how come some players tend to dominate the tourney circut, IE daniel Negreanu (spell check?)

I feel playing tourneys for cash is actually more skill and patience than luck, but if they cards aren't there (the luck part) the cards just arent there...

as far as final table stuff, you got to get lucky and win the races...

So lot of luck for the big big money,
Lots of skill to get to the money period...

On a side note though, i feel the guy who believes in lucky play is better off in a tourney where the payoff to risk margin is better, but lucky people would be horrid in a cash game i believe...

It's pretty darn near impossible to quantify this. Of course in the longest of long runs (for tourney purposes, were talking decades here) skill wins out, but you'd be surprised at how far luck can take you (or break you) over the course of a year or four.

In a specific tournament, it depends on your goal. If you are trying to win, then I'd say 50/50 skill luck. If you are trying to just make the money, then I'd say 85% skill 15% luck for an average sized field (approximately 300 or so). The larger the field, the larger the luck factor becomes.
